Taking an online course can be a great way to improve your skills or learn something entirely new from the convenience of your home. With so many online learning programs to choose from, you are bound to find the perfect program just for you.

Founded in 2012 by two Stanford University computer science professors, Coursera is an open online course provider that provides a variety of educational material on a plethora of subject matter. By partnering with universities, Coursera can offer thousands of lessons instructed by professors from over 150 universities worldwide. They also offer certifications and degree programs. Coursera offers unlimited access to its material for a low monthly fee, making it more accessible for learners than traditional brick and mortar classrooms and universities.

MasterClass is an online educational platform that offers tutorials in a variety of fields. For an annual fee, users get access to pre-recorded lessons instructed by top experts. In addition, students get access to video lessons, workbooks, and exercises. Course topics range from cooking, acting, economics, politics, videogame design, etc. Experts include award-winning actors, world-renowned chefs, critically acclaimed authors, etc.

edX is a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) provider that offers university-level online courses to users. They offer weekly lessons comprised of short video instruction and interactive activities to help students understand the material. edX is a non-profit organization and even offers some courses free of charge. They partner with over 100 schools, non-profit organizations, and corporations to offer a variety of courses in different fields of study. edX has a global userbase with students located in over 196 countries worldwide.

Codecademy is an online course platform that offers lessons in various programming languages, including Python, Java, SQL, C++, etc. In addition, using Codecademy’s paid “pro” option, users can access personalized lesson plans to help them achieve their coding goals in a manner best suits them individually. Codecademy also has partnerships with world-renowned software companies like Amazon to offer lessons designed by experts in the field.

TED is a media organization that provides free informational video content. Educational topics range from politics to culture to the humanities. TED speakers have included former presidents, world-renowned animal rights activists, business leaders, social justice activists, and Nobel prize winners; TED-Ed is an offshoot of TED that provides online course material in the form of animated video lessons and interactive online activities. In addition, students, parents, and educators can design their own lesson plans using TED’s educational platform.

Created in 1975, National Geographic Kids started as a magazine published by the National Geographic Society to help to educate kids on the wonders of the natural world. National Geographic Kids now has an online platform filled with educational materials for kids. Users get access to personalized quizzes, educational videos, and even games, all designed to help educate them about nature and take action to protect the planet.
